Inherited Metabolic Disorders

Inherited Metabolic Disorders are rare but there are over 1000 known types. Such disorders are treatable with special diets (in some cases drug therapy may also be used).

Neonatal screening is used to detect a very small handful of these disorders, though it is dependant on which Country you live in, and in some cases which State or County you are from. Accurate and rapid diagnosis is essential if there is to be the successful treatment of such disorders.

The Nutrition and Dietetics team from Birmingham Children’s Hospital have worked tireless for many years to raise awareness of the Inherited Metabolic Disorders. On the 26th October 2008 Birmingham will host its first every half marathon. A team from Nutricia and Nutricia will be running to raise awareness of Inherited Metabolic Disorders.
